The Lowhouse
was conceived by James Anwyl, who has been awarded
the
Happold
Scholarship
for Sustainability and Construction for his pioneering
work in research and development of a new design
template for a rural development.
James' work has been informed and supported by a number of engineering and construction specialists:
Our structural engineers have been instrumental in guiding the project to its current stage, introducing KLH and bringing confidence to the build process with their industry-recognised experience. See their work for some of the best architects in the world, such as David Adjaye and Norman Foster here...

Karl-Heinz has helped insightful design advice on structure with respect to the Austrian company's fantastic 'cross-laminated timber' product. KLH and Techniker combined on a school sports hall at Kingsdale in south London. More...

Tristan engineered the ventilation system, minimising heat loss and maximising carbon savings. The architecture aids efficient operation of the heat recovery system with clay pipes buried in the thermally activated slab.
Flow Analysis
Nick carried out extensive thermal dynamic modelling to ensure the passive solar design principles aligned with heating and cooling needs of the occupants.
Sadler Energy
Naomi has carried out the Pre Assessment of the Lowhouse against The Code for Sustainable Homes.
Aspect Ecology
Dan regularly conducts work under licences issued by DEFRA or English Nature and his survey at the Lowhouse site has shown there to be no overriding constraints for the development. As a team, we have already drawn up a plan for increasing and enhancing the biodiversity on the site.

John has completed a full SI and discovered poor quality (clay/ soil mix) soil requiring concrete piles rather than our intended slab-only approach. Fortunately, no contamination has been found on this brownfield site.
Stuart carried out the comprehensive Flood Risk Assessment and hydrology report confirming Environment Agency data that there's no risk of flooding on the site.
George Thompson Ltd. [Client]
Pete Thompson is the commercial director of this family run farm. His patience, ability to embrace technical concepts and intelligence as a decision maker make for the ideal client and partner in Chi.
